I'm not being a good Liberal Democrat in Harrogate. Most of what seems to be coming out is how great some bloke from Obama's campaign is, because he likes Twitter, so it's probably not a great use of my time anyway. The disjunct between The Party as seen at conference and the reality for me on the ground is so great anyway that really the only benefit to attending conference for me is the training sessions. Still, at least we've not lost our entire student vote by supporting tuition fees...
Instead, my parents are up. This is the first time I've seen them since Christmas, and the first time they've been in my flat since they helped me pick up wibblefish's futon back in August, so they haven't seen the bookshelves or other improvements to the property. The plan had been that they'd come up and stay over with me tonight, and my sister tomorrow; however my Dad's poorly, so they ended up checking into a hotel tonight instead. I felt a bit slighted at first, but having seen him in person, he really does look ill, and probably a night in a hotel will be more luxurious than my futon, comfortable and snuggly as it is.
They arrived too late this afternoon, and will be leaving too early tomorrow, to actually do much together; I'd been considering the Imperial War Museum North, but instead we went to WH Lung, the Chinese cash and carry on the A34. My parents can't get many exotic ingredients in the uncultured hinterlands of Down South, so rely on trips to Manchester to stock up on yellow bean paste, catering-sized tubs of oyster sauce and so on. Due to Dad's illness, we skipped going out for a meal, and Mum and I cooked some Chinese. I showed Dad some of the video snippets from The Convention on Modern Liberty which I had on DVD, and lent them both Taking Liberties (DVD) and Mark Thomas' As Used on the Famous Nelson Mandela. I like politicising my family gradually - my Mum's already swapped Tesco for the Co-Op after reading Tescopoly .
Eve got to show off her felting skills, my parents admired how homely the flat feels now we've settled in, and generally a nice time was had by all. I'm off to join Eve in bed shortly; my parents will be back tomorrow morning for breakfast before heading down to Birmingham for lunch with my sister and then home.
It is a bit of a flying visit, the main aim of which was to deliver my Christmas presents, my late grandmother's wheelchair for Eve, and a box of my old Warhammer miniatures - Mum says she's going to bring a little something from my room at home each time she comes up, until it's all cleared. I'm going to set aside some time to go down and visit them when it's not some big family occasion, and hopefully we'll get a bit more quality time. |
